The PRISM architecture addresses the primary operational limitation of HNSW indexes: the requirement that complex multi-layer graph structures remain pinned in RAM to avoid devastating disk thrashing. Instead, PRISM routes incoming vectors through a lightweight centroid tree into discrete posting lists stored in regular relational heap buffers.
For distance calculations, the engine implements SIMD-optimized vector math supporting AVX2, AVX-512, and ARM NEON intrinsics. It pairs this compute acceleration with RaBitQ quantization, projecting 1536-dimensional vectors into compact bit vectors for rapid initial candidate filtering before exact reranking.
To support active write traffic without degrading search quality, the extension integrates the SPFresh LIRE protocol from SOSP 2023 via an explicit prism_rebalance routine. This allows database administrators to split overloaded posting lists concurrently in background worker threads without taking indexes offline.
Because the initial release requires PostgreSQL 18 with development headers and the Meson build system, widespread enterprise adoption will depend on hosting providers rolling out bleeding-edge engine support.
