On August 17, 2026, solid-state battery pioneer QuantumScape announced a major commercialization milestone, delivering its first B-sample battery cells to automotive manufacturing partners.

In automotive engineering, B-sample delivery signifies that cells are produced using automated, high-volume production equipment rather than manual laboratory prototyping. The QSE-5 cells represent the culmination of over a decade of materials science research backed by more than $2 billion in capital investment.

The heart of QuantumScape's technology is a proprietary solid ceramic separator thinner than a human hair. Traditional lithium-ion batteries cannot use pure lithium metal as an anode because irregular lithium spikes (dendrites) penetrate plastic separators during fast charging, causing catastrophic internal short circuits and thermal runaway fires. QuantumScape's ceramic material is mechanically impervious to dendrite penetration while conducting lithium ions at room temperature as efficiently as liquid electrolytes.

Because the battery is manufactured without an anode—relying on pure lithium to plate directly onto the copper current collector during the first charge cycle—the cell eliminates inactive host materials. This boosts volumetric energy density to over 800 Wh/L, allowing an electric vehicle to gain 50% more range without expanding battery pack weight or size.

Cycle life testing by independent German laboratory TÜV Rheinland confirmed that the cells retained more than 95% of original discharge capacity after 1,000 full charging cycles, establishing solid-state batteries as a commercial reality.
