Source: Official technical release 'FLUX 3 Image Klein: open weights, 5.6B parameters' by Black Forest Labs founders Robin Rombach, Andreas Blattmann, and Patrick Esser, published October 15, 2026.
Black Forest Labs launched FLUX 3 Image Klein as an open-weights counterpart to its frontier visual intelligence suite, aiming to bring high-fidelity generative imaging and local editing directly to personal developer workstations. The model was trained across multimodal signals combining still imagery, physical video motion dynamics, and synchronized audio event representations.
In blind evaluation benchmarks conducted by BFL, the 5.6-billion-parameter model rated above both open alternatives (such as 7B Qwen-Image 2.1 and 12.9B Krea 2) and commercial closed APIs including Ideogram V4.5 and FLUX.2 [pro]. Compared to its predecessor FLUX.2 [klein] 9B, Image Klein gains 91 Elo points in text-to-image and 70 Elo points in image editing while shrinking overall parameter count by 38%.
Hardware optimization was a central design focus. Developed with Nvidia support, the model ships in FP8, INT8, and NVFP4 formats alongside a step-distilled 16-step checkpoint. On consumer desktop GPUs, the INT8 configuration runs inside ComfyUI on systems with as little as 8GB of VRAM, generating 1024x1024 images in 4 seconds on an RTX 5090 and under 9 seconds on an RTX 4070. On enterprise GB300 silicon, step-distilled inference completes in 0.55 seconds.
The release includes both a base checkpoint designed for fine-tuning via LoRA in Ostris AI-Toolkit and Diffusers, and a distilled variant for low-latency serving. Commercial developers can self-host under the FLUX Kommunity License or query BFL's managed API starting at $0.009 per generation.
