On September 22, 2026, Anthropic officially released Claude Opus 5.5, redefining frontier artificial intelligence capabilities across massive-context processing, agentic coding, and reasoning economics.

The release marks the debut of the 5.5 model family. For enterprise systems architects, the headline development is a 20% cut in per-token pricing compared to Opus 5: input tokens are billed at $4.00 per million (from $5.00), output at $20.00 per million (from $25.00), and cached input reads at $0.20 per million (from $0.50). Anthropic says that, with better token efficiency, Opus 5.5 costs 40% less to run than Opus 5. This pricing realignment establishes a direct challenge to hyperscaler competitors by rendering million-token reasoning passes economically viable for daily production workloads.

Beyond raw economics, Anthropic positions Opus 5.5 for long-horizon agentic work. Adaptive thinking at maximum effort is the default for most reported results, and Anthropic says output is more than 30% faster than Opus 5.

In Anthropic's launch table, Claude Opus 5.5 scored 66.4% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 (GPT-6 Astra: 57.9%), 54.4% on FrontierCode v1.1 and 67.7% on Humanity's Last Exam with tools. Anthropic did not report a SWE-bench Verified score. On the arena.ai text leaderboard, Opus 5.5 scores 1507 (#2 of 414 entries as of October 11, 2026), ahead of Claude Fable 5.1 (1501) and Opus 5 (1490).

Separately, the researchers behind the newly discovered C-HD graph shortest-path algorithm reported that multi-agent pipelines led by Opus 5.5 helped produce its proof, which was checked with the external Lean 4 theorem prover.

Claude Opus 5.5 is available immediately across the Anthropic API, Claude Enterprise, AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure under the model ID claude-opus-5-5.
